Peoples Potential Unlimited is a record label based in Washington DC, specializing in archiving and releasing rare and obscure dance music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. We caught up with Andrew Morgan, the man behind the PPU label to see how it all came about.
THE BAG MESSENGER: Where are you from? How did you first get involved with records?
PEOPLES POTENTIAL UNLIMITED: I'm from north carolina, my first record was Jesse Bruce a one off pressing, dark country, some guy at my dad's work gave it to him and we played it on the fisher price, I was just a kid, played that thing to death and even carved some symbols in the dead wax.
THE BAG MESSENGER: How did you first discover your love for boogie and disco?
PEOPLES POTENTIAL UNLIMITED: You can blame Herbie (Hancock) for that one. I found "monster" in middle school at a yard sale for a nickel. I didn't really understand what i was getting into but again it found a home on the fisher price, along with some of my other finds that day (Three Dog Night, and The Camelot sound track)15 cents right there.
THE BAG MESSENGER: Can you describe the process you go through to reissue a record? Whats the greatest length you have gone to track down an artist?
PEOPLES POTENTIAL UNLIMITED: 1. Find the group 2. Get that tape 3. Get that playlist list 4. Get that art 5 . Press 6. List 7. Link 8. Email 9. Sell 10. Find something else to work on. I guess the greatest length i've gone to to track somebody is having someone else find somebody for me. I usually do everything myself, which I've learned is a mistake. Gotta let go.
THE BAG MESSENGER: How did Peoples Potential Unlimited come about? What is the label all about?
PEOPLES POTENTIAL UNLIMITED: Right now it's grown into something i never expected, helping long time PPU fans start their own labels, or release their own music.. distributing friends records. connecting people - paying everybody from back in the day back. putting out whatever feels right. trying to do more live shows. George Smallwood coming to a town near you...not to be missed!
THE BAG MESSENGER: Any upcoming releases?
