Philagrafika-2010

Today is the beginning of the first annual Philagrafika event here in the city of Philadelphia. Focused on displaying print media as fine art, and pulling major talent from around the globe, Philagrafika just may revive this cities old standing reputation as a print mecca. Stay tuned for photos from openings around town, and read the description below taken from http://www.philagrafika2010.org -
THE BAG MESSENGER

Philagrafika 2010 is the first presentation of what will become a recurring event in Philadelphia, celebrating the role of print in contemporary artistic practice.
Involving more than 300 artists at more than 80 venues throughout the city, Philagrafika 2010 will be one of the largest art events in the United States and the world’s most important print-related exposition. Prominent museums and cultural institutions across Philadelphia are participating in Philagrafika 2010, offering regional, national and international audiences the opportunity to see contemporary art that references printmaking in dynamic, unexpected ways and to experience the rich cultural life of the city in the process. The Philagrafika 2010 festival is the result of more than five years of planning by a group of enthusiastic and committed individuals who have mobilized the entire community around a common interest. The Artistic Director and the members of the curatorial team traveled extensively across the country and across continents, visiting studios, print shops, biennials and other art events in search of artists to include. And the administrative staff of Philagrafika, the Artistic Director and the curatorial team have worked closely with local institutions in planning and implementing a wide range of exhibitions, public programs and events, resulting in a citywide collective effort, which appropriately reflects the collaborative nature of printmaking itself.
The festival is divided into 3 components:
The Graphic Unconscious is the core exhibition organized by the Artistic Director and the curatorial team. Works by 35 artists from 18 countries will be displayed across five venues: Moore College of Art & Design; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA); Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Print Center; and Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art, Temple University; with significant installations by different artists on view at each site.
Out of Print pairs five artists with five historic institutions in Philadelphia: the American Philosophical Society (APS) Museum; the Historical Society of Pennsylvania; the Independence Seaport Museum; the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Rosenbach Museum & Library. Each artist created new work for the festival inspired by the extraordinary collection with which they were matched.
Independent Projects, organized by seventy-five additional cultural institutions in Philadelphia, include a huge variety of monographic, group, and thematic exhibitions in which the printed image plays a central role.
The Philagrafika 2010 festival contends that the printed image lies at the heart of contemporary art. Concepts of imprinting, multiplicity, reproduction, and seriality, as well as physically printed forms are frequently used by artists who do not think of themselves as printmakers. As artistic vocabularies have expanded and mixing media has become commonplace, artists have increasingly drawn from inherent characteristics of the print to achieve specific aesthetic and expressive goals.
The core exhibition, The Graphic Unconscious explores the ubiquitous presence of printed matter in our visual culture and how concepts like accessibility, democratization, dissemination and transience inform diverse contemporary art practices while expanding the realm of printmaking itself. Exposing the print component in sculptural, environmental, performance, pictorial and video works, and highlighting their relevance to contemporary art, is the goal of The Graphic Unconscious.
Walter Benjamin proposed an interesting analogy in his essay, A Small History of Photography (1931): “It is through photography that we first discover the existence of th[e] optical unconscious, just as we discover the instinctual unconscious through psychoanalysis.” Let us ask a provocative question: Is there a print unconscious? If so, where does it lie? Just as printed materials have become so ubiquitous in our daily visual culture that they pass unnoticed, so too have print processes become an integral part of art-making without being acknowledged. Can the ethos of printmaking serve as a framework for understanding contemporary artistic production? Can a close reading of the realm of contemporary art from the perspective of print help illuminate, in some way, our understanding of the world?
Like photography, print is the manifestation of a physical object, but instead of being an emanation of the referent, an imprint gets its indexical quality by physical contiguity: the surface of the print matrix on which the image is made (e.g. woodblock, etching plate, etc.) is in direct contact with the paper (or other surface) onto which the image is printed. Leaving an imprint is the basis of printmaking―the print is the witness of the primeval urge to make one’s mark for posterity. But why leave an imprint? As its physical manifestation, the imprint is the body of the print; might the intention be its soul? Are these tangible and intangible qualities that print embodies what ought to be called the graphic unconscious? These are some of the questions that inspired The Graphic Unconscious exhibition
Below are a few examples of peices that will be on display.

Doze Green Artist Spotlight
“Doze Green is the 80’s Rock Steady Crew dancer and graf writer that took his art to other dimensions, other worlds, other realities and back again. His show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery that opened last Saturday has completely sold out, according to our sources. With the prices of work ranging from four to five figures, this is big. Doze’s artwork graced the cover of several music projects in the 90’s including the Deep Concentration (scratch/turntablist DJ) series on OM Records, and at Bay Area Future Primitive events well, but he differs from a lot of oldschool graf cats in his current complete and utter commitment to his fine art. You don’t see a ton of his work in designs for big companies, or even small ones for that matter. His art is produced (for the most part) for him, and him alone, and he has been VERY successful in getting this commitment to pay off.
Doze’s characters evoke a range of emotions and convey many messages, and really teach and enrich while serving to please simultaneously. In the above video, Friends We Love gives us a preview of their upcoming Doze Studio feature.”- Frank Green (From our Friends at Frank 151)

I’ve never really been one for live painting, but Doze seems to pull if off well. Check out this segment of “Scratch”, which documents Doze painting at Future Primitive Live in San Francisco.- Case
The show at Jonathan Levine Gallery will be up from January 16, 2010 through February 13, 2010. If you are in NYC, put it on your list-The Bag Messenger

The Bag Messenger: Tzatziki recipe
Cooking & Designing Finding The Right Notes
Anyone who knows our family can attest to our serious love of food. That being said, we are going to share some of our family recipes on here from time to time. Here is the first installment. Enjoy!
-The Bag Messenger
Ever since I bought a massive fish from the fishmonger in the downtown arcade in Dayton, Ohio and made my first meal, I have loved cooking. Though the meal was only memorable because it was the first meal I made and the fish was so impressively large. Putting flavors together in my head, like drawing or thinking about design, is a favorite activity. When I eat a meal in a foreign land that wows me I have to duplicate it without a recipe. I discovered my love for this seminal Greek food while traveling in the Peloponnese region of Greece. Enjoy it and share it with others.- David Bloom
Tzatziki (Greek yogurt spread)

1 container Lebna (Yogurt cheese)
6 cloves garlic
½ cup olive oil
1 cucumber (skinned and seeded)
Salt (to taste)
1 lemon
1 t oregano
Chop and stir together all ingredients, serve with good bread

Tucker and Bloom: Strobelight Heathens Interview
Tucker & Bloom recently caught up with LA creative force, and street observers Strobelight Heathens. The group has been hitting the studio hard working on new material, and adding crust to old drum tracks. Read the interview to gain insight into how fashion, music, and taxidermy can be forged into raw funk.
THE BAG MESSENGER: What is Strobe Light Heathens and how did it come about? STROBELIGHT HEATHENS:: The group is a collaboration between vocalist Dono Dagger and producer Braxton Nations. The sound of Strobelight Heathens emerged from just living day to day in LA being involved in Fashion, Art, and creative circles. We wanted to create a big sound that fused together a progressive approach. Just straight up in your face music with that grittiness that we like. Drums, basslines, and emotion. THE BAG MESSENGER: I know you guys are involved with fashion, how did you see music and fashion working together? Do they co exist? STROBELIGHT HEATHENS:: We definitely feel that these worlds co-exist. Fashion is an interpretation of self...it's a documentation that people carry, that displays how they feel most comfortable within ones skin. Being out here in LA you have a broad culture. You have some cats who just follow whatever is the bigger trend, lookin like they are high school not knowing how to wipe themselves. But then you have people who get it, and they wear their clothes and their clothes don't wear them. Music has that same aesthetic. You got clowns who literally don't know up from down. The music that's made is transparent and only relevant to whats goin now. We are aiming to make something that is an extension of who we are as individuals and at the same time speak for the underdog. Our goal is to make memorable songs that will someday be played at Sports Arenas 28 years from now. Anthems. THE BAG MESSENGER: Where do you find inspiration in life? DONNO: The grind, duke. Things are crazy. Riding my bike in LA I see everything from Homeless pirates and tranny hookers. I've helped Elton John buy a chandelier from the boutique I work at. Also thanks to Ronald Regan, the Father of American Homelessness in LA, a lot of these Joneses are walking around having conversations with themselves with booty shorts on, nah I mean. I also can't forget the lady vixens that flock to this city from all over the world, the roach coach taco joints, artists and colleagues that we have relationships with, random found objects on the street, and taxidermy. I feed off the city. THE BAG MESSENGER: What are the tools of the trade in your line of work? DONNO: The number one tools of the trade is an open mind. Once you got that, you can orchestrate what you feel, you feel me Presley? When we record our doodles we like to do things in the moment. We try to keep it as live as we can. BRAXTON: We don't like producing music that sounds like it just came from technology or from a specific formula. We really aim for creating a sound that's more so emotion so people can relate to and feel. Whether it be making our drums patterns on old tape machines or playing live patterns the sides of bicycles or pipes, we know its right when we achieve that mutual feeling. We approach the vocals just like any another instrument, customizing the sound to get that raw feel. Cadence and noise are all equally important...Its how you glue it all together. THE BAG MESSENGER: What is in the future for the group? BRAXTON: Definitely hitting the road doing shows. We are gonna be dropping a few songs each few months for the first part of the year with remixes of each song from other bands and groups. Its gonna be really out there, we have some really great colleagues we really dig and respect who will be working with us to make that happen. We are working on Fashion, design ideas, and art that will all tie in with Strobelight Heathens and the vision behind it. A lot of these items will be only available exclusively through live shows, special events, boutiques and pop up shops online. DONNO: Look for lots of internet exclusive downloads, collaborations, and girlfriends leaving the lefties. THE BAG MESSENGER: I know you have been really inspired and into taxidermy. Can you tell me how that all started? DONNO: The first time I knew I was into taxidermy was in preschool. We would have story time in the library and there were animal heads all around the library. As a kid, just those natural forms really intrigued me. I would just stare at the different teeth, the different eyes, the fur, and emotions in the facial structure and I would just think about where it came from and the life it lived. I've always collected bugs, found abandoned wild animals and tried to raise them. Ya dig. I guess in a weird way I have that primitive connection to animals like I'm some type of lost indigenous person...Fast forward to now, I have started acquiring quite the slew of taxidermy. I have collected everything from grizzly bear claws, coyote teeth, bison teeth, different types of carnivore antlers, and bones. Whether it be animals, plants, or crustaceans, I draw inspiration from it on some level.
STROBELIGHT HEATHENS: Boomerangs
STROBELIGHT HEATHENS: Paradigm Continued.... THE BAG MESSENGER: Alright some quick ones..Favorite Cranny Food Spot in LA? STROBELIGHT HEATHENS: Benitos THE BAG MESSENGER: Favorite Films? STROBELIGHT HEATHENS: Holy Mountain, The Elephant Man, Rosemaries Baby, Metropolis, Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Raging Bull THE BAG MESSENGER: If you had to name 3 songs off the top of your head right now, that would give us a glimpse into the mind of Strobelight Heathens world what would they be? STROBELIGBHT HEATHENS: ESG - Dance - Come Away with ESG - 1983 Animal Collective -My Girls - Merriweather Post Pavillion - 2009 Ghostface Killah - Daytona 500 - IronMan - 1996 Making sure you have what you need when you need it can can be crucial. Tucker & Bloom: Nathan Brown Interview
THE BAG MESSENGER:Name, age, where are you from?
Nathan: (NA+HAN), 32yrs old. Los Angeles, Nashville, Atlanta.
THE BAG MESSENGER: What do you do for work?
Nathan: I ‘m a lot of things. I’m a freelance concert and event promoter, commission artist, music producer, DJ, and ex sponsored AM-skateboarder
THE BAG MESSENGER: How did you first get involved with this line of work?
Nathan: I got involved with promoting events through djing about 10 years ago, and ran an event promotions company in Atlanta for some time.
When it comes to art, I have been doing commission and design work for about ten years as well. I got into that through graffiti, and being involved in that culture.
THE BAG MESSENGER: I know your father is a famous music producer, how has that shaped how you look at production?
Nathan: Funny thing, I actually rebelled against music production and even learning music (typical teenager). At that age I ended up fully throwing myself into skateboarding and doing really well with that. Just in the past few years have I wanted to learn music production, learn instruments, and take productions seriously.
THE BAG MESSENGER: What are the tools of the trade? (what’s in the bag)
Nathan: When it comes to art I still use a lot of spray paint, specifically Montana paint. For production I’m using Reason 4, Pro Tools, and a Axiom 49 midi controller these days.
THE BAG MESSENGER: Where do you find inspiration to create?
Nathan: I find a lot of inspiration through people watching. I also relish the little details in architecture and on the street. The things I see in my travels push me to give back creatively. I often try to translate ideas between music and visual art, so you could say that music inspires me, but also that they go hand in hand for me.
THE BAG MESSENGER: You travel a lot, any interesting trips this past year? Favorite places to go?
Nathan: I recently went on a trip to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, which was completely gorgeous. I also hit Belize during the same trip. As a rule I try to stay away from the tourist spots so I can really get a feel of how the people live. Traveling around down there was humbling. The normal way people live there is so drastically different from how we live in the states. It was a great cultural experience, and provided a bit of perspective.
I was also just in Maui; and that’s always an incredibly inspiring and cleansing place place. San Francisco and NYC are always favorite places to visit.
They are both so different from each other, but the amount of culture packed within both cities always inspires me.
THE BAG MESSENGER: Any projects you have been working on or that we should be looking for?
Nathan: I have been blessed with a lot of commission artwork this year. I just finished up a big installation in downtown Ft Worth, TX. That is a 3 story elevator shaft in a private residence. Definitely something I have never done before and a great experience.
I love trying new things and painting on new mediums. This past year I also teamed up with Circa footwear as a sponsored artist. Hopefully this year I will be collaborating on a shoe and some apparel with them. I am also always working on new mixes
so I’m sure to release a few more this year.
Hit the road and bring just enough, because sometimes less in more.

Sheen Bros Interview
Tucker and Bloom met up with the Sheen Bros at the site of their creative inception in Manhattan’s LES. The Sheen Bros may not be a name many people know…yet, but the members of the group, Cosmo Baker and 4th Pyramid have both had there hands in music for years. Although in its early stages the group has been raising industry eyebrows, crushing NYC dance floors, and getting busy in the studio.

Tucker & Bloom: How did the Sheen Bros. come about?
Cosmo Baker: 4th pyramid and I first linked up when we were touring with Pharoahe Monch, and we did a few tours afterward in different capacity’s.
I would be the DJ for the tour, and Pyramid would be on the road coordinating the whole thing. We had talked about collaborating on music before, and than one night we were here (Plan B) at a scion event smoking a cigarette right out front…
4th Pyramid: If you look across the street there is the “Sheen Bros Inc” bodega and that’s where the name came from.
Cosmo: Pyramid looked up and said to me, “ha, yo Sheen Brothers”, and I said “HA Sheen Brothers”, and than we looked at each other and we’re like “SHEEN BROTHERS?”.
4th: We felt like, this is right.
Cosmo: So basically we had the name before we even had the group. That night we just ended up talking a bunch of shit on twitter. “There’s a lot of people over here. We’re Blowing up! Sheen Brothers is Killin It in 2009 and 2010!”
Everybody we know was really feeling the energy. It was something we just came up with on the humbug that quickly became something that we could put some work into and make happen.
Cosmo: I make music, and Pyramid does also, but when we started talking about the actual collaboration it was like this light bulb went off over our heads. On some eureka shit. Which brings us to Lyrics to Go…
4th: Lyrics to Go is our management company, and they have been doing events and all types of stuff. They produced the Big Daddy Kane 20th year anniversary party. They manage guys like J Period, Boogie Blind of the Executioners. Tamir and I have done stuff behind the scenes on some multi-million dollar mogul shit. He had heard the mix that I put out in May and was really feeling the energy. He wanted to get down with the group and so we all connected. He really brings the organizational aspect to life. When Tamir came in, and we had a bunch of cluttered ideas. He really helped bring the vision together and now were in full swing.
Tucker & Bloom: So what kind of projects do you guys have lined up?
Cosmo: We decided to put out some DJ mixes, volume one and two called “Skum Bag Funk”. The mixes are sort of alluding to some of the original stuff that we have been messing with. We actually put out the volume one a few months ago. The guys got on my case about making “Skum Bag Funk Vol.2”, and that just came out this Monday. These two mixes are just like teasers to “The Sheenic Route” album which is coming out soon.
Tucker & Bloom: Is the album going to be composed of DJ edits like those on the tapes?
4th: The mixes are filled with the kinds of records that we are influenced by and the kind of stuff that we’re sampling. It is going to be a more club record for people that have heard my solo stuff before. Previously it has been very boom bapish hip hop. This is defiantly something that were coming at with more of a producer and dj angle. As much a lyrical content as we want this project to have, we want it to be a record for the clubs.
Cosmo: Were trying not to pigeon-hole ourselves with a decidedly hip hop record, or a record that is a new boogie record, or a new funk record that sounds like its from 87. Because there are elements of all that stuff within what were messing with musically. I wont go as far as to say that the project is not classifiable but we are just trying to touch on a lot of elements and make something which sounds good to our ears.
Tucker & Bloom: What exactly are you guys rocking with? Whats the equipment?
4th: I’m on Abelton a MPD (midi controller)
Cosmo:For live performances, I’m on the turntables and Serato scratch live, although…I’m going to start incorporating Abelton into my live set as well.
4th The project is like live DJ edit set. We might play records back to back, but if you ever listen back to a set, its mostly live edits.
Its cool because it gives me a chance to step into the DJ world and a chance to show my production talents.
Cosmo: Its the same with me. Being predominantly a DJ but also somebody who’s been producing for well over 10 years. This is the first time in years that Ive been excited about making a project like this happen. Its a Sheen Thing.
Tucker & Bloom: How is it you guys are working together? How are you managing the distance?
4th: I’m in NYC a lot
Cosmo: I come to Toronto when I can.
4th: He’ll flesh out an idea and send it over to me, and than Ill write to it. We’re working out of Chung King Studios when I’m here, which is a legendary studio, and that energy is great.
Cosmo: There is definitely a particular creative energy with both of us. Already its resonated with people, who are really excited about the future of the project.
4th: Both of our fan bases are excited. Because it wasn’t a contrived thing. I’m like Cosmo in that Ive been working on working on music all the time but I haven’t necessarily been excited about anything like this. Its great when an electro blog
that’s posting the who’s who of electro, posts a Sheen Bros mix and says “this is a breath of fresh air”. As hip hop guys, to be able to get into that world is great. As much as we come from hip hop, the group is trying to make music you can dance to.
Cosmo: If you listen to volume two a lot of the inspiration I got for that was listening to Spoonie Gee. Disco rapping might be flavor of the month, but not really because its a trend that 30 years old.
Its always been timeless and classic, and that’s what we’re striving for.
