This is a nice virtual tour of the basement of A1 records in NYC. The place is stocked from floor to ceiling with records of all sorts, and is world famous for having rare gems. Producers, DJ’s, and collectors have been pulling records by the bag load for years, and there is no end in sight.  -From The Bag Messenger

Sock Drawer Sessions Vol.1

  • Dec 20, 2009

“Sock Drawer Sessions is a mix Rate and I put together a couple of years back with the intent of showcasing slept on hip hop b-sides and remixes we were coming across digging for records. At the time, Serato and other digital formats were just beginning to explode on the scene and folks were beginning to transition quickly. This mix was done with only vinyl, and although we didn’t know it at the time, the musical content is now rapidly becoming extinct. The beauty of the obscure and dusty remix is overshadowed by the accessibility of digital media. I’m not here to complain about the death of vinyl or begrudge the progression in technology; it’s a blessing and a curse. I’m simply here to let you know: socks come in all shapes and colors. Sometimes you have to dig deep to find a pair that works, and take them on a walk.”-Case

Disco e Cultura Vol. 2
Get It Here
I was recently turned on to DJ Nuts from Brazil, and feel the need to be the messenger for some of his mixes in here. They are fresh by design, composed of a wide range of Brazilian music, and way too slept on. Nuts appears to have serious crates, judging from the photos I have seen of his living space, and his premium track selection. This Disco e Cultura series has some covers of classics, and some unique raw stuff. Defiantly a high quality mix.

North To South Vol.1

My father is really heavy into Jazz. My childhood is peppered with Latin jazz, and the fragrant smell of leather in our home. I remember listening to Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto bored stiff. I didn't really understand how this music was shaping my taste until at the age of thirteen I discovered hip hop. It became a sort of lens for me to examine the rest of the musical world through, and the use of sampling became a fixation. I was always intrigued to hear how my favorite producers would take a dusty old snippet, flip it, and make it new again. My favorite sounds were always those familiar jazz rifts I heard at home. As an adult I began to seek out those records, rediscover the music I grew up with and expand my musical horizons. This mix is about a lot of things for me. I look at my musical taste and how it has changed throughout the years. I look at the partnering of my father and I to establish our bag company, Tucker & Bloom. To me it's as much about the journey in life as where you are going, even if you can't smell the leather all the time.-Case Bloom < Click the cover for download. Keep digging. Eric Haze “New Abstracts & Icons” Opening NYC

Last month Tucker & Bloom caught the New Abstracts and Icon’s opening by Artist NYC based Eric Haze. The show could be found on the second floor of Gallery 2 (812 Broadway NYC), and the pieces included essentially followed the title, “New Abstracts, and Icon’s”.
Haze has been working in graffiti, and design for over 30 years. He is known as one of the pioneers in modern street wear, and brought the graffiti aesthetic to clothing in the 1990’s. Haze also designed many iconic hip hop album covers, including the cover for the Beastie Boys “Check Your Head”, and is credited with iconic logo work for Public Enemy, and MTV.

Taken from www.interhaze.com

“Born and raised in New York City, Eric Haze has been
making his impact felt in the worlds of art, product
and graphic design for over 30 years. After spending
the early 80’s on the front lines of the downtown New York
art scene, Haze opened his design studio in 1986,
becoming one of the first visual artists to define the look
and graphic language of Hip Hop during it’s golden years.
Some of his most classic works include designs for
Public Enemy, EPMD, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys.
Haze also founded his own eponymous clothing line in 1993,
which remains recognized worldwide as one of the original
brands that helped create the blueprint for streetwear
and urban product as we know it today. Haze studios
continues to produce a wide range of design work and
collaborations with industry leaders such as Nike, Casio,
Honda and Stussy. 2008 also marked Haze’s return to
the fine art world with a one man exhibition of new paintings
and drawings at the Museum of Contemporary Art / Hong Kong.
Haze currently directs his brand, design and art studios
out of their new Brooklyn headquarters. “

The opening was filled with NYC street wear enthusiasts, graff writters, designers, and magazine folk. DJ Neil Armstrong and A-Track provided the sound track to the night, and the bar was crazy packed. The show will remain up until Thursday December 10th, but Haze will remain in the streets indefinitely.

Here are some of the photo’s taken Friday Nov. 27th from The Boom Bap at the Blue Bar. The event went really well, and the vibe was great. Tucker & Bloom has been a part of this event since its inception a little under two years ago ( we do more than just make dj bags, we use them as well), and we are always surprised at the crowds response. If you missed this event be sure to check back for the next installment.
